A World Without Work

A World Without Work A World Without Work A World Without WorkMoshe Vardi has devoted his life to making technology serve our needs. As the director of Rice Universitys Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology, his contributions to computer science are vast. But recently he has started to ask unnerving questions about the consequences of ever-increasing automation. A world where robots and algorithms replace as much as half of the human workforce may be mere decades away. Nows the time, he says, to start planning for a future with massive unemployment, and to start soul searching for what humans might do with a lot of extra time on their hands.ASME How were you drawn to the question of what to do when technology has replaced all jobs?Moshe Vardi The Atlantic Monthly contacted me to write an article about Alan Turing. It finished with the question of the potential impact on jobs. The editor said, The stuff you wrote about Turing isnt so great, but the stuff about jobs is very interesting, can we focus on that? The article, the Consequences of Machine Intelligence, came out in 2012. Now, Im in academics and we count citations. Google Scholar says I have close to 37,000, but it took me about 37 years to do that. With this article I got 50,000 hits in three months. Its an issue that has a huge impact on society and people care very deeply about it. Its mora immediate to them than almost anything technical I can do.ASME So has the potentially darker side of technology given you pause as a researcher?Moshe Vardi. Image Rice UniversityMV Most people like to get up in the morning, look in the mirror, and feel good that they are doing good things. Most of us, we need to make a living, but we also want somehow to say we are good people. So if you ask most computer scientists if what theyre doing is for the benefit of society, they say Yes, of course. We develop technology, people can use it. But now I look at the big picture. The question is much more open than I used to believe and I spend more and more of my time studying this topic.ASME What about the argument that technology creates as many jobs as it obviates?MV The neoclassical economists say that there will be new jobs, that human needs are infinite. But this is a matter of fierce debate. No one really knows. Is the fact that technology creates new jobs an economic law or is it a trend that will end? Can this look at the past predict the future? Maybe and maybe elend. And what happens if not? The assumption is the good the economy creates for everyone. What happens if this is not true anymore? In 1981 the PC came out. But if you look at the last 35 years, the economic data is terrible. Its been good for the top one percent, maybe the top ten percent. People with good cognitive skills have done well working class people and middle class people have done miserably. Look at manufacturing. We have lost many millions of people. What are the new jobs? Website designing? How many that worked in making cars are designing websites? They are the lost generation. This is not something about the future, the future is now. There is already a crisis.ASME Youve written that we might expect unemployment to go as high as 50 percent. What are the job-stealing technologies on the near horizon?MV The obvious thing is driverless cars. Its coming up in the next 10 years. Ten percent of the jobs in the U.S. involve operating a vehicle so automated driving is going to see millions of people losing their jobs. Then there are other parts of the logistical chain, from off-loading the containers in a port, which is being automated as we speak, to automated tracking, and moving goods in warehouses. Amazon is working very hard on robots that can unpack and pack. The whole thing can be automated, and this is not some science fiction, this is unfolding in the next couple of decades.ASME How do you think we should plan for this kind of a future?MV One proposal is the basic income guarantee, whi ch is an idea that used to be a conservative idea. It came from people like Milton Friedman. If you look at the social welfare network, there is a huge government bureaucracy that decides who gets this support and who doesnt get this support. They said lets do away with this bureaucracy lets give everyone a basic income guarantee. Everyone will get it, even if youre a millionaire, you still get your $20,000 a year. So, basically, we eliminate all welfare programs, and everyone gets enough to live on.ASME So if our survival needs are met, whats wrong with not working? Isnt the point of technology to make life easier?MV Work doesnt just provide a living, it provides meaning. We define ourselves by what we do. The first question we ask when we meet someone is What do you do? We dont ask each other what we had for lunch, but somehow What do you do? seems like an essential question. Its the thing that gives meaning to our lives. If you take it away, its a radical change for humanity. We d ont have many historical precedents for that, but there are some. In the Roman Empire they had slaves, who, like robots, did all the work. One solution was to have a subsidized grain, and entertainment. Its dystopian, its not the way we want to see society go. We dont want to see gladiators kill each other. Maybe today we are a little more enlightened, but do we want a society where all people do is watch spectator sports and lots of reality shows? Is this what future society will look like?No one really has an answer there. Until recently this idea was just preposterous.Michael Abrams is an independent writer.Learn how to leverage emerging technologies that create sustainable solutions for international challenges at ASMEs COMS 2016What do you do? seems like an essential question. Its the thing that gives meaning to our lives. If you take it away, its a radical change for humanity.Prof. Moshe Vardi, Rice University

The Surprising Way to Get Out of a Slump

The Surprising Way to Get Out of a SlumpThe Surprising Way to Get Out of a SlumpI am in a slump. This happens from time to time, usually after a big event in my life or career. And although I know from past experience that I will probably be on the upswing shortly, every time Im here at the bottom, I am petrified that I have elendhing more to offer. When I welches still life coaching, I counseled my clients to be patient with slumps. I said that slumps were the minds way of making room for the birth of new ideas. And I still believe thats true. But when youre in a slump, patience is the fruchtwein difficult thing in the world- not because it is so very hard, but because we assume that patience is doing nothing, that patience is about sitting on our hands and waiting. This assumption, however, is wrong. While patience is steadfastness and self-control in the face of provocation and delay, it is definitely not idleness. Nowhere in the dictionary does it say that patience equals time stan ding still. So friends, against all assumptions to the contrary, the best thing to do when youre stuck in a slump is to exhibit patience- by doing something. Now, before you go out and buy barrels full of absinthe and gin as something to weather out the storm, be warned that patience is not the same as avoidance and denial. I have learned this the hard way, so believe me when I say that being actively patient does not mean ignoring the wait, drowning out the wait, or becoming victim to the wait. It is simply making the wait worthwhile. The first thing I do when Im in a slump is remove the unnecessary from my calendar. I postpone coffee dates and errands until I can get some perspective on what Im waiting for exactly. Contrary to what you might be thinking, this is not idleness or avoidance- its reassessment, and it is at the very heart of getting out of a slump. It forces me to recharge my mental and emotional batteries, which are often depleted after firing at 100% when I was at the top of my game.Sometimes this reassessment feels like muck- its a sloshing through, it is replete with tears and snot and it isnt pretty. But Im pretty sure its necessary, because after the muck, after Ive gotten to the gooey center of things and found out exactly where my new normal is- then comes the fun.The fun part about being patient in a slump is that it gets your brain churning in new ways. Once you understand that patience is active and all about self control, you get to control exactly what activities to do to get your brain moving again. This is the part of the slump I am currently in. This time, the activity I choose is writing, something I havent had the pleasure of doing all summer. Its a quiet sort of churning, but really, you are allowed to be as bold or timid as youd like in picking your activities. After all, patience is all about self control. My slump before this was undone by turning my living room into a giant ball pit. I ordered thousands of rainbow colored ball s and filled my home with them. What had once been reserved for childhood and Chuck E. Cheeses had a little revival in my apartment. Sounds silly, but in between the jumping in and throwing of and inviting friends over for a swim through my sea of rainbow colored play balls, my brain had time to recharge the parts that were slumped.I can tell that this slump Im in is about to be over, because my neurons are firing in new ways, unrelated to my initial problem. Had I fallen victim to the belief that all one can do during a slump is stand idly by wallowing in distraction, I may have never gotten this far. To tell you the truth, although Im happy to be nearly out of this one, Im kind of looking forward to my next slump. After all, I have a closet full of rainbow colored play balls, and Im looking forward to figuring out what to do with them next.Photo courtesy of Melissa Pierce.

How women can take control of their leadership presence

How women can take control of their leadership presenceHow women can take control of their leadership presenceYou may have a leadership title, or tremendous leadership potential, but that in itself doesnt give you leadership presence. These are typical comments I hear when asked to coach an up-and-coming female whose career has stalledIt isnt that she couldnt do the next job. Its that no one on the executive team sees her that way.She has a great track record, but she doesnt look like a leader.Shes warm and friendly, but she doesnt have the gravitas we are looking for in a senior position.Leadership presence is not an attribute automatically assigned to you because of your business results. It isnt necessarily reflective of your true qualities and potential. Instead, it depends entirely on how others evaluate you. Being perceived as a leader when interacting with customers, peers, or executives, is the essence of leadership presence.Women face unique challenges when it comes to being perceived as leaders. They may even add to these challenges by buying into to the Imposter Syndrome, or using body language that appears submissive, or waiting for others to recognize and reward their achievements. You cant avoid making an impression on others, but you can control the kind of impression you make.Or can you? Here are three situations where you have absolutely no control over some aspects - and total control over others1) Making a great first impressionWhat you cant controlOther peoples biases, prejudices, and negative past experiences with someone you resemble. What you can controlIt takes less than seven seconds for people to assess your power, confidence, competence, warmth, and empathy. Here are seven ways to make your first impression a positive oneAdjust your attitude. People pick up your attitude instantly. Before you turn to greet someone, or enter an office for a business interview, or step onstage to make a presentation, make a conscious choice about the attit ude you want to embody.Stand tall. Pull your shoulders back and hold your head high. This is a posture of confidence and self-esteem.Smile. A smile is an invitation, a sign of welcome. It says, Im friendly and approachable.Make eye contact. Looking at someones eyes transmits energy and indicates interest and openness. (To improve your eye contact, make a practice of noticing the eye color of everyone you meet.)Raise your eyebrows. Open your eyes slightly mora than normal to simulate the eyebrow flash that is the universal signal of recognition and acknowledgement.Lean in slightly. Leaning forward shows youre engaged and interested. But be respectful of the other persons space. That means, in most business situations, staying about two feet away.Shake hands. Research shows it takes an average of three hours of continuous interaction to develop the same level of rapport that you can get with a single handshake. (Just make sure you have a nice firm grip, as your partner will read your level of confidence from the quality of your handshake.)2) Projecting authority and powerWhat you cant controlGender stereotyping - that (primarily) subconscious preference for females to be seen as nurturing, rather than powerful. What you can controlThere are two sets of signals that people look for in leaders Power/Authority/Status and Warmth/Empathy/Likeability. Women usually get high scores in the warmth category, but may lose ground when it comes to projecting authority and power. When you are feeling sure of yourself and your message, you automatically display signs of authority and power. What interferes with this natural process is the Imposter Syndrome - the inability of women (more than of their male counterparts) to internalize accomplishments, resulting in the fear of being exposed as a fraud. And that insecurity is often displayed nonverbally. To build your intrinsic self-confidence, try recording your small wins in a success journal (on a daily basis - perhaps right b efore you go to bed) and watch how this act of awareness boosts your self-esteem. Also, notice what your body is saying.Women tend to condense their bodies, keeping elbows tucked in close to their sides, tightly crossing their legs, stacking their materials in small, neat piles, and contracting their bodies to take up as little space as possible. When you sit in a manner that makes you looks smaller, it also minimizes your look of authority. On the other hand, power and authority are nonverbally demonstrated through a command of height and space. When you sit up straight, claim space by hooking an arm over the back of your chair and spreading out your belongings, you appear to be more assured. While standing with your feet close together makes you look hesitant or unsure of what you are saying, widening your stance, relaxing your knees and centering your weight in your lower body give you a solid and confident look. The quality of your voice can also be a deciding factor in how you ar e perceived. Speakers with higher-pitched voices are judged to be less powerful and more nervous than speakers with lower pitched voices. One easy technique I learned from a speech therapist is to put your lips together and say, Um hum, um hum, um hum. Doing so relaxes your jaw and throat, allowing your voice to find its optimal pitch.Remember You dont have to choose between warmth and power. You can remain likeable and still project more authority simply by exhibiting these subtle nonverbal cues.3) Being a serious contender for that senior positionWhat you cant controlFavoritism or a boys club mentality. What you can controlSharpen up your presentation skills. You impact and influence an audience best when your messages are clear, compelling and brief. Simplicity isnt just a nice to have communication technique. Its a necessity for being perceived as a leader. A good tip is to ask yourself In 10 words or less, what is my key message? If you cant state it succinctly to yourself, you are not ready to communicate it to others. I also advise using the newspaper format of stating that key message (the headline) upfront.Sometimes the smallest word choice can have a big impact. Use words that carry a sense of ownership and self-reliance. Say I wont (which indicates you have decided not to do something) rather than I cant (which implies you dont have the skills or talents for the task). Say I choose to, not I have to.Just as important as it is to use self-assured phrases, it is equally important to eliminate qualifiers, fillers, and minimizers. People will judge you as lacking conviction if you use qualifiers such as To the best of my knowledge I could be wrong . .. This may not be a good idea but Fillers like um and uh make you seem unprepared and uncertain. (BTW Many fillers can be eliminated if you just pause between thoughts.) And minimize your use of minimizers eliminating words like Maybe, sort of, kind of, somewhat if you want to sound confident.Research wit h senior leaders in Silicon Valley found that the top criterion for promotion was visibility. Thats why doing a great job and communicating well are only the prerequisites for being considered for a senior-level promotion. One savvy female executive stated it this way Its not enough to be a legend in your own mind. Are the executives in your company aware of your talents and job performance? If not, you need to increase your visibility by volunteering for key projects, offering to give presentations, publicizing your teams accomplishments, and taking an active part in your professional association. You need to broaden and deepen your network and look for mentors and sponsors who will guide and help promote you.You dont have total control over other peoples perception of you, but you may have more control than you think.Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D., is an international keynote speaker and leadership presence coach. 3 Awkward Situations That May Happen in a New Job - The Muse

3 Awkward Situations That May Happen in a New Job - The Muse3 Awkward Situations That May Happen in a New JobStarting a new job is an exciting adventure. But its also riddled with landmines of potential awkwardness- think getting lost on the way to the copier or mistaking your new colleague for the mail guy. The gaffes and blunders may be inevitable, but they can still catch you off guard if youre bedrngnis prepared. The best teacher is experience, and luckily for you, Ive had my share of cringe-worthy new job encounters over the years. Here are few of my favorites and how I recovered with my dignity- and my job- intact after each horrific incident.1. The CEO I Didnt KnowIt welches literally my first day on the job, and one of my colleagues was walking me around the office to introduce me to everyone. Our office wasnt particularly large, but after working in a 10-person shop for the past several years, having mora than 60 people in the office was overwhelming. Id already forgotten ev eryones names (and almost my own), so when a well-dressed man strutted through the reception area, it didnt even occur to me who he might be. Attempting to be polite, I smiled broadly, and introduced myself. He brightly replied that he already knew who I was. Shocked, I smiled and asked, and you are? The entire room erupted in laughter. He was, of course, our CEO. Someone Id spoken to on the phone a mere two days earlier. Although my legs told me to ansturm away as fast as I could, I took a breath, stood tall, and tried to gracefully apologize for my blunder. I laughed at myself lightheartedly and told him I wasnt sure I remembered my own name after meeting everyone and that I hoped hed forgive my temporary memory loss. Everyone laughed again, but this time it was with me, not at me.If this situation makes you wince, you can save yourself the agony by reviewing your new companys top brass the night before you start. Take a quick refresher of the company website, and try to put names to faces. And if you draw a blank- or the CEO looks nothing like his picture- stay calm, and smile. Just let yourself laugh it off and mention youve met so many great people that day, its hard to keep track of everyone. Then never, ever forget his or her name again.2. Cliques and ClashesThe last time you worried about cliques was probably in high school. As it turns out, new jobs can feel a bit like high school at first, and the clique factor can cause some major anxiety, not to mention make for some super awkward situations. But unlike high school, chances are your colleagues are a lot less catty. Youll just have to get to know them- all of them. Thats what I discovered after starting a new job several years ago. I naturally gravitated toward one group of people who shared similar interests and just became good morning friendly with everyone else. What I didnt realize was that, by not putting myself out there with all the other groups, I was essentially acting like my old high sch ool self by excluding people I didnt immediately click with. And unfortunately, it made for a rocky start. It took me about six months to make up for that shaky start, but after that, Id not only become a trusted colleague to nearly everyone on my team, I got to know everyone a lot better, which made our daily workplace culture a lot more enjoyable. The best way to handle this situation is to just avoid it altogether. When you start a new job, its your chance to start fresh with everyone there. Some people will be easy to win over, and others may take more time. Dont align yourself too closely to any one group, but rather make alliances with everyone. Grab coffee with one clique on Monday and another on Friday. Talk to everyone equally, and youll find the cliques become a lot less pronounced- at least for you. 3. Facilities Face-OffsI dont know what it is about kitchens and bathrooms in a new place, but they almost always give me a tinge of anxiety. There always seems to be a right p lace to keep your lunch, or a stall no one ever uses because the door unexpectedly pops open when someone else uses the paper towel dispenser. The last time I started a job, there was in fact a bathroom door that was a bit wonky, and I had the unfortunate experience of having the door burst open, unexpectedly, several times until an understanding soul pointed out the quirks of our bathroom doors. While there isnt really much you can do to avoid these things, you can drive your new colleagues crazy with your perpetual non-compliance. That means paying attention to everything for the first few weeks. If someone makes a snarky comment when youre microwaving your fish in the communal microwave, its probably a good idea to nix that habit. And if there are things that annoy you, chances are they probably annoy everyone else, too. That slamming bathroom door? Try your best not to let it slam when youre around. Itll take some time, but your colleagues will pick up on your courteous observat ion and will likely give you a bit of a break if you miss a few things.Yes, these situations are all potentially awkward, but there are a few things you can do to ease the sting and make it through your 90-day probationary period without causing too much of a scene.

Build Your Personal Brand, Get Hired

Build Your Personal Brand, Get Hired Personal branding isnt exactly a fresh concept the term has been around for at least a decade. Its generally understood that by building up your personal brand, you position yourself as a desirable resource to others. Thanks to technology and social media, the concept has been steadily evolving, and the strategy behind building your brand has changed significantly since its inception. At its fruchtwein basic level, personal branding has become inseparable from your Internet reputation and social media presence. So what does all this mean for job seekers? Making your name stand out amongst the faceless masses seems like an incredibly daunting marketing task for the average person. Looking for employment is a full time job, and most job seekers dont have the time to spend all day on Twitter and LinkedIn spreading their influence (or building it from scratch the m inute they need a new job.)But job seekers dont need to fully immerse themselves in the craft of personal brand building to reap some of its most important benefits. With few simple, easy steps, job seekers can gain creditability and increase their overall exposure to recruiters and hiring managers leading to more job opportunities. Try these steps as part of your job hunting strategyGet your name out there Its likely you already have a Facebook, LinkedIn, or Google+ account. If so, youre already on your way to establishing a strong Internet presence. Make sure you set at least one of these social channels as public to increase your visibility to recruiters and employers. You want to be found as easily as possible within the top ten results of a Google search is desirable. Having a blog or an online portfolio of work will also help you stand out. Use very descriptive words to describe what you do your skills and accomplishments.Build up a reputationWhen you apply for jobs, its ve ry likely that youll be screened based on your web presence. The first thing an employer will do is check your credentials and information online. Recruiters and hiring managers are looking for unsavory information reasons not to hire you. Take advantage of this fact by filling the Internet with positive examples of yourself. LinkedIn recommendations, intelligent forum discussions, and insightful article posts all make a great impression when youre trying to get hired.Manage your web presence Now that youve left a trail of breadcrumbs for recruiters to follow, its time to sit back and relax, right? Not a gelegenheit you need to regularly, or at least semi-frequently update you web presence to stay relevant and appear actively engaged in your industry. The online persona youve been building is the start of your personal brand a reflection of you as a solid candidate for hire. Going forward, the amount of effort you want to put in is up to you, but youve already laid the foundation of a great career platformThink like an employer When crafting your various profiles on social media and places like your website, be sure to think like an employer. For example, if you are a software engineer specializing in Java, do you think employers are looking for software engineers? No, they look for Java Developers in New York (for example.) If youre a pharmaceutical salesperson, dont call yourself a geschftlicher umgang development specialist or other names load up your profile with the most commonly searched for titles Pharmaceutical Sales Executive, for example. Try to view your profile as someone would who is quickly scanning for keywords like a recruiter or employer. With a little attention, your personal brand is easy to manage. If you havent spent the last five years building up a follower base, dont worry it really wont hurt you unless you are applying for a job in social media. Instead, think of your Internet presence and profiles as a business card, a simple pl aceholder to get attention that you normally wouldnt. Be sure that your social profiles are focused, highly detailed, and professional. Good luck out there
